Description: | Award-winning cellist Raphaela Gromes combines a recording of DvoĹ?ák's famous romantic Cello Concerto with deeply moving works by Ukranian composers Valentin Sylvestrov, Hanna Havrylets, Yuri Shevchenko and Stepan Charnetskyi.
Following the tremendous success of her album "Femmes" (2023), OPUS Klassik award-winning cellist Raphaela Gromes releases a new album, "Dvorák: Cello Concerto", featuring one of the most renowned cello concertos alongside inspiring and moving pieces by Ukrainian composers. It was inspired by Gromes' visit to Kyiv in December 2023, where she performed the Dvorák Concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and its chief conductor Volodymyr Sirenko, to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
The centerpiece of the album is AntonĂn DvoĹ?ák's (1841-1904) Cello Concerto, which is one of Gromes' absolute favorite pieces for cello. It weaves themes of love, loss, and transcendence, represents the pinnacle of Romantic expression, and reflects DvoĹ?ák's deep yearning for his Bohemian homeland. With the aim of integrating Ukrainian music into the European context of classical music, Raphaela Gromes also presents works by Ukrainian composers on this album. "Prayer for Ukraine" by Valentyn Sylvestrov (born 1937) embodies the hope and resilience of the Ukrainian people amidst their struggle for peace while capturing the emotional intensity and meditative quality of his music. Hanna Havrylets' (1958-2022) deeply moving piece "Tropar" is rooted in Ukrainian sacred choral traditions, showcasing the nation's cultural heritage and the composer's profound connection to her homeland. Juri Schevchenko's (1953-2022) "We Are," a lyrical paraphrase of the Ukrainian national anthem, and Stepan Charnetskyi's (1881-1944) powerful folk piece "Chervona Kalyna" evoke the enduring spirit of a people longing for peace, sovereignty, and freedom.
