Description:When Nikolai Kapustinâ??s music was discovered by a wider audience in the West, it certainly came as a shock: Who was this Soviet composer, whose music mostly resembled an Oscar Peterson improvisation, but was notated in heavily detailed scores? As we continue to discover more of his music, not least on this new recording, Kapustin shows how he developed his style subtly and steadily, always moving with the times. As the music that influenced him changed, so did his own. The development of Big Band Jazz can be traced in his work and, in that sense, Kapustin never settled on one style, except that he fused jazz and classical music so inseparably in the first place. -
When the music of Nikolai Kapustin was discovered by a wider audience in the West, it was positively shocking: Who was this Soviet (!) composer, whose music sounded more like an Oscar Peterson improvisation than anything else - but who wrote detailed scores, black with notes?! As we discover more and more of his music and as we again can hear on the present recording, Kapustin developed his style subtly and steadily. He went with the times. As the music that influenced him changed, so did Kapustin's. The development of Big Band Jazz can be traced in his work. In that sense Kapustin never settled on one style (within the parameters of his unique fusion of jazz and classical, granted) but remained flexible about the musical material and the way he related it to the orchestra.
The CD "Kapustin: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 6" features the exceptional talents of Dominik Beykirch, Frank Dupree, Jakob Krupp, and the SWR B orchestra, bringing to life two of Nikolai Kapustin's most celebrated works for piano and orchestra. Known for his unique fusion of classical forms with jazz idioms, Kapustin?s concertos are vibrant showcases of rhythmic vitality and virtuosic flair. Pianist Frank Dupree has garnered international acclaim for his dynamic interpretations and technical brilliance, while conductor Dominik Beykirch is recognized as one of Germany?s rising stars in orchestral leadership. The collaboration with bassist Jakob Krupp and the renowned SWR B ensemble ensures a performance that is both precise and full of character. Released by Capriccio?a distinguished label known since 1982 for its commitment to high-quality classical recordings?this album stands out as an essential addition to any collection celebrating innovative twentieth-century music.
