Description: | Ã?le Flottante is Mr. Beatnick´s 5th album, following 2023â??s Joy InVariation (including the notorious cover of Love on a Real Train) and hiswell-received off -beat collaboration with London-based avant-gardeagitator Richard Greenan â?? Coasty â?? this is his fi rst contribution to theInternational Feel trademark. Probably best known for some big deephouse revivalist tunes circa 2013 on the now dormant Donâ??t Be Afraidrecord label, Beatnick now converts that aural quality anddimensionality into the Balearic system.
Ã?le Flottante takes its name from the tastiest French pudding of Mr.Beatnickâ??s childhood holidays. The name, also a jeux de mots - fl oatingisland - hinting at the albumâ??s inspirations and sense of identity, as adanceable soundtrack to a fi ctional island. Explored with high intensityand over a yearlong process, the sounds of the well-worn, but neverfailing Balearic universes were a mind expanding infl uence. Think ofgenre staples like Software, Manuel Goettsching, Mark Barrott, LenLeise, Don Carlos, Gaussian Curve, Joan Bibiloni or Yasuaki Shimuzu.
â??I spent a year listening to a lot of synthesized island music, andmarveling at the many twinkling wonders of the Balearic musicaluniverse. Struck by a sense of belonging that had often eluded me onmy musical journey thus far, as the weirdo at the back of the club whohad orbited many scenes for 20 years, but never felt like I fi tted in, Ifound music that made me feel like I had come home. The songs thatcame out of this process are presented in the order that they werewritten - an open book of ocean hymns, honest and spoken from theheart.â??
Ã?le Flottante tries its very hardest to avoid being any one thing inparticular. At one point, it is a gentle beach walk accompanied bypolyrhythmic drum plod and fl ourishes of Guzheng. At another, theinfamous James Yancey septuplet swing is repurposed against amarimba melody that wouldnâ??t be out of place in one of Linkâ??s forestadventures.
Elsewhere, there are the bellows of distant whales, touches of Italiandream house and a splash of vintage madchester, all working to createa space that feels both familiar and loaded with well worn tropes, butwith its own quirky sense of personality, facets which are oftenattributed to Mr. Beatnickâ??s holistic b-boy approach. This is hisunderstanding of a Balearic (b-boy) stance. Just with a fl oat instead of afreeze. - ? +© 2024 International Feel |
