La Caravane du Caire became the greatest success of it's composer, Andre Gretry, as soon as it premiered in 1783.This flamboyant opera-ballet takes us to a fantasised Orient, where colourful characters meet: an ambitiousslave trader, an idle Pasha and distraught lovers experience a thousand adventures, in a sumptuous setting,to the sound of Gretry's superb instrumentation. In a whirlwind of precious fabrics, the Ballet de l'Opera Royalaccompanies Herve Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel in a brilliant rendition of this late 18th-century masterpiece.
Grétry: La Caravane du Caire on DVD, produced by Château de Versailles Spectacles, brings to life André Grétry?s celebrated opéra-ballet first performed in 1783 at the Royal Opera of Versailles. This lavish production revives the exotic and colorful world of 18th-century French opera with stunning costumes and historically informed staging. The cast features renowned baritone Jean-Sébastien Bou, acclaimed for his performances at Opéra National de Paris and Glyndebourne; soprano Judith van Wanroij, known for her interpretations of Mozart and Gluck; as well as tenor Mathias Vidal, a frequent guest at major European opera houses. The production is directed by Marshall Pynkoski, co-founder of Opera Atelier in Toronto, whose expertise in Baroque stagecraft has been praised worldwide. Conductor Hervé Niquet leads Le Concert Spirituel orchestra?famous for their vibrant renditions of French repertoire?and has previously recorded award-winning albums such as Lully?s Armide and Rameau?s Les Indes galantes.
