Following the success of his debut album KOSMOS SUITE (nominated for the German Jazz Prize 2023), Lukas DeRungs is set to release his second album, WAKE. The album was recorded immediately after a tour and showcases a tightly knit band whose members have grown together over the years, building trust and crafting the songs collaboratively: Immy Churchill (London) on vocals, Karim Saber (London) on guitar, Jonas Esser (New York) on drums, Jan Dittmann (Mannheim) on double bass, and Lukas DeRungs on piano, vocals, and beatboxing. Half of the ten original songs feature lyrics-some written by vocalist Immy Churchill, others by German artist Constanze Zacharias. The other half are compositions where the voice is used as an instrument, blending seamlessly with the guitar in virtuosic lines. The album moves between contemporary jazz, groove music, and songs, offering a powerful yet finely nuanced sound. Three of the tracks feature prominent figures from the European jazz scene: Rainer BÃ¶hm on piano, Bodek Janke on tabla and percussion, and Johannes Stange on flugelhorn, didgeridoo, and trumpet. The title WAKE carries a range of meanings, from "to wake up" to "vigil" or "funeral wake." It symbolizes awareness, presence, and a call to trust one's intuition. -
