 | | Description: | Maurizio Pollini, who died in March 2024, first came to international prominence when, at the age of 18, he won the 1960 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Having signed an exclusive contract with EMI, the young Pollini recorded two albums devoted to Chopin.
The first, featuring the Piano Concerto No 1, received an enthusiastic welcome ā?? ā??ā?¦ a spine-tingling performance,ā?¯ wrote Gramophoneā??s reviewer, ā?? I do not ever expect to hear the concerto played better.ā?¯ Surprisingly, the highly anticipated second album ā?? the 24 Ć?tudes ā?? remained unreleased. During the post-production process, without explanation, Pollini had withdrawn his approval of the tapes. It was not until some 50 years later that he approved the recording, leading to the release under licence of a newly edited version.
Now the recording of the Ć?tudes has been remastered in high resolution for this SACD release. In 2011, Gramophone, citing Polliniā??s ā??awe-inspiring assurance and uncanny technical perfectionā?¯ and ā??near flawless balance of sense and sensibility,ā?¯ concluded that ā??All lovers of great piano-playing will need to add this to their collection.ā?¯
