rnDer schwedische König Gustav II. Adolf erteilte 1625 den Befehl zum Bau der VASA als Flaggschiff seiner Ostseeflotte. Unter der Leitung eines niederländischen Schiffbaumeisters machten sich 400 Handwerker auf der königlichen Werft von Stockholm an die Arbeit. Der aus Eichenholz gebaute Rumpf mit 2 Kanonendecks war Anfang 1628 fertig gestellt. Mit mehr als 700 üppig vergoldeten sowie bemalten Skulpturen und Verzierungen wurde die VASA anschließend zu einem imposanten Prunkschiff ausgebaut. Mit 69 Meter Länge und 72 Kanonen war das nach der herrschenden Königsdynastie benannte Kriegsschiff eines der größten seiner Zeit. Vom König für den Krieg gegen Polen dringend angefordert, setzte die VASA am 10.August 1628 ihre Segel zur festlichen Jungfernfahrt im Hafen von Stockholm. Nach einer Windböe strömte Wasser durch die geöffneten Stückpforten und vor den Augen der versammelten Menschenmenge sank die VASA innerhalb weniger Augenblicke.
