Description:Celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2020, the legendary Orchestra Baobab issue their landmark 2002 reunion album for the first time on vinyl. Adored both at home in Senegal and across the world, Baobab occupy a special place in the history of African music. Their unique and uplifting Afro-Latin hybrid owes everything to the cosmopolitan nature of the band who take influences from all around Senegal as well as Mali, Nigeria, Togo, Guinea, Guinea Bissau and beyond. â??Specialistâ?? was the first album by the full group since 1982â??s legendary â??Pirates Choiceâ??, a holy grail for African music fans. Recorded live at Londonâ??s Livingston Studios in just ten days and produced by Nick Gold with Youssou Nâ??Dour, â??Specialist In All Stylesâ?? is a milestone in African music - an inspired, diverse and entirely contemporary take on Baobabâ??s original Afro-Latin magic, introducing new material and reinventing some of the old tunes that made them legends. Baobab are blessed with a sublime rhythm section and two of the most distinctive sounds in African music, Barthélemy Attissoâ??s extraordinary guitar and Issa Cissokhoâ??s atmospheric sax. But what also makes the band unique is its five lead singers, all with their own contrasting but complementary styles. The vocal team is expanded on â??Hommage à Tonton Ferrerâ?? by special guests Buena Vista Social Club star Ibrahim Ferrer and by Youssou Nâ??Dour himself. -

Senegalese Orchestra Baobab was among the foremost practitioners of the Afro-Cuban style that became popular in it's part of the world in the 1970s. Years later, when more electric, rock/pop-influenced music took over Africa, the group disbanded after an unsuccessful attempt at updating their sound. It would oversimplify things to say that the success of their 2001 reunion made these comeback kings seem like Senegal's answer to the Buena Vista Social Club, but it's also hard to deny. Sounding fully invigorated on their reunion album, SPECIALIST IN ALL STYLES, Orchestra Baobab proudly displays the old-school musical values that made them so popular 30 years earlier. The African guitar patterns and vocal lines intersect perfectly with the Cuba-inspired percussion and song structures for a sound that's alternately mellow and busily percolating. Ironically, the album was co-produced by Youssou N'Dour, whose mbalax sound unintentionally helped unseat the Orchestra to begin with, but N'Dour is a longtime admirer, and his passion for the group's music is obvious in the loving care given to reproducing their unique sound on SPECIALIST IN ALL STYLES.
