Commissioned by George Balanchine, Jeu de cartes is a prime example of melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic ideas emerging helter-skelter from Stravinsky' imagination. Unlike his other ballets, it contains no slow music and no lovers' pas-de-deux adagio.
