| | Description: | Karl hat Angst vor dem Tod. Er ist schwer krank und weiß, dass er bald sterben wird. Aber sein großer Bruder Jonathan tröstet ihn: in einem Land namens Nangijala, in das man nach dem Tod kommt, werden sie sich wieder sehen. Als kurze Zeit später ein Feuer ihr Haus verwüstet, rettet Jonathan seinen Bruder aus den Flammen - kommt jedoch selber um. Bald darauf stirbt auch Karl - und kommt wahrhaftig nach Nangijala. Dort findet er alles so vor, wie es ihm Jonathan versprochen hatte und natürlich trifft er ihn hier im Kirschblütental wieder. Endlich kann Karl all die Dinge tun, die ihm während der langen Krankheit versagt waren - er reitet, er schwimmt, er tobt herum. Doch auch im Kirschblütental lebt man nicht ohne Sorgen. Der Tyrann Tengil mit seinen Soldaten und der furchtbare Drache Katla unterdrücken das benachbarte Dornrosental. Jonathan schließt sich dem Kampf gegen Tengil an und reitet mit einem gefährlichen Auftrag ins Dornrosental.
