Description: | 2008 repress. Subtitled "Describing Planes of an Expanding Hypersphere". Recorded in 1984 but held up in a post-production stasis until now, this is music for 5 guitars, mallet guitar, violin, drums, bass, keyboards, that is being touted as the "most dense, cacophonous Branca symphony yet." "Glenn's music gets quite often inaccurately described as wall-of-sound/noise/guitars/whatever. A wall exists for the purpose of containment. 'Symphony No. 5' is expansive beyond limits, smashing the wall (at least sonically) between this dimension & all others. There is quite audibly the garbling's of the voices of alien intelligences banging at the doors of our world as we dream of theirs."Symphony #5 ...Hypersphere" is a groundbreaking CD release by avant-garde composer Glenn Branca, produced by the renowned label Atavistic. This symphonic work showcases Branca's signature approach to experimental music, blending electric guitars and orchestral elements into an intense sonic experience that challenges traditional boundaries. The composition explores themes of chaos and order through layered textures and dynamic structures, making it a must-listen for fans of innovative contemporary music. Atavistic, known for its commitment to cutting-edge artists in jazz, rock, and experimental genres, has consistently delivered high-quality releases that push musical frontiers.
Glenn Branca was a pioneering figure in the world of experimental music and minimalism. Emerging from New York?s no wave scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he became famous for his guitar symphonies?large-scale works performed with ensembles of multiple electric guitars. His influence can be heard across generations of musicians including Sonic Youth members Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore who played in his ensembles. Branca?s previous successes include "The Ascension," widely regarded as one of the most important underground albums ever recorded. |
