 | Description: | THE ENORMOUS SUCCESS of â??The Final Countdownâ?? single and album, undoubtedly took the world by surprise. Who among us would have imagined that an, up until then, obscure Swedish hard rock band would have the reach and good fortune to elevate their profile to international superstar status so easily. It was a turn of events that reinforces the notion that anything can be possible as long as the stars are in alignment and the songs are undeniable. Europe was formed during the late 70s, initially under the name of Force, before they scored a record deal with CBS and switched their name to Europe. They had recorded, as Europe, two well received albums in their native Sweden but were then taken under the wing of CBS in New York who encouraged the band to pull out all the stops for their third album. It was, in effect, a Cinderella story (albeit a seven year overnight success) and they grasped the opportunity to craft one of the greatest melodic hard rock albums of the â??80s.
On release the record faced slow progress but gradually the title track started to gain traction across the globe, hitting the top spot in several territories, selling over three million copies of the album in the USA alone. Produced by Kevin Elson (Journey, Mr Big) and issued in March 1986, the album contains a concise and extremely well written selection of tracks, including the rousing â??Rock The Nightâ??, â??Cherokeeâ??, â??On The Looseâ??, and the glorious ballad â??Carrieâ??. Of course, itâ??s the indelible mark left by the title track that the album will be best remembered for. Look out too for some searing guitar work from John Norum. - European edition includes three bonus live tracks; 'The Final Countdown', 'Danger on the Track' and 'Carrie'. Azmi H. - 29/Aug/2022 80's "Hair Metal" is how to describe this. Although too "synth" for some people, "Rock the Night" is EASILY one of the best top 40 metal anthems EVER. Fist pumpin' jam is more like it!
| | Alexander S. - 11/Jul/2019 The album is extremely ambiguous. The gorgeous thing “The Final Countdown” is familiar to, probably, any inhabitant of the Solar system belongs to the number of such hits that can be counted on fingers. Everyone knows that EUROPE is “The Final Countdown”! Perhaps, this hit will seem to someone too commercially (like the whole album, of course), but you can’t argue against the facts: the leading melody played on the synthesizer, just like everyone else, are simple and ingenious, ideally combined with each other as some kind of indivisible whole; the vocals are absolutely unmatched. This is quite enough to put the item among the greatest masterpieces. True, the play of instruments in this composition (and in all the others on the album) by itself gives a little primitivism ... But in the light of the mentioned advantages of this song, this no longer matters.
The second thing “Rock The Night” is a bit more modest, but also great. She is one of those who, upon hearing of which, the uninformed listener notes: “wow, and I know this song! So it also turns out to be EUROPE ... ”The third number is a beautiful, albeit painfully standard, ballad.
Alas, this is the end of the album. And from the fourth song “Danger On The Track” you start to get bored. The song, in general, is nothing like that, but not the same - just above average. Interestingly, it contains the most real keyboard solo, not the fact that relevant in this case. And the other things, in my opinion, nothing more than mediocrity. In some places stronger, in some places weaker. Although, played, of course, on the level. In general, evaluating this album with a single assessment is equivalent to bringing God's gift and scrambled eggs to a common denominator. The first thing is dozens above, the next two are just dozens, the fourth is about seven, and everything else is on the verge of five and six ... In short, whatever one may say, but the impression is that the album was created for one song. Nevertheless, this song is such (or rather, the first three songs), that for her sake the album is worth buying!
| | Alexander N. - 17/Apr/2019 Remastered CD reissue of the original 1986 album from the Swedish rock band Europe. Including the hit Final Countdown and three bonus tracks.
| | Valeriy R. - 03/Aug/2018 I think this is not an album with one, s/t, masterpiece. Vice versa, a set of well done tracks, real glam/hard rock hits by the Swedish band. Sure, their best release!
| | Ivica S. - 03/Dec/2017 When it appeared, this album was funny - today when I hear it, this is a good HM album
