Veronika bleibt allein in Moskau zurück, verliert bei einem Bombenangriff ihre Eltern und wird von der Familie ihres Freundes aufgenommen. Weil sie vom Geliebten nichts mehr hört, heiratet sie dessen Cousin, doch wird die Beziehung von der Erinnerung an Boris überschattet. Veronika trennt sich von ihrem Mann und nimmt später ein Waisenkind bei sich auf. Als die Rote Armee 1945 triumphierend in Moskau einzieht, wartet die Frau vergeblich auf ihren Jugendfreund. Weinend verteilt sie ihre Blumen an fremde Soldaten.
