Description:
Der Drehbuchautor Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage) wird von Selbstzweifeln geplagt. Als er den Auftrag annimmt, den auf Tatsachen basierenden Roman Der Orchideendieb zu adaptieren, ist er echt überfordert - und kommt auch mit der Roman-Autorin Susan Orlean (Meryl Streep) nicht klar. Zu allem Übel nistet sich auch noch sein Zwillingsbruder Donald (ebenfalls Nicolas Cage) bei ihm zu Hause ein. Begeistert versucht Donald, seinem Bruder nachzueifern und schüttelt mal eben ein Skript über einen Serienkiller mit multipler Persönlichkeit aus dem Ärmel.
Zudem hat sein Bruder auch noch regelmäßig Sex, während Charlie nicht einmal ein erstes Date gelingt. Eines Tages jedoch hat Charlie eine folgenreiche Inspiration. Er bricht die goldene Regel: Er wird sein eigenes Dilemma als Rahmenhandlung in das Drehbuch einbauen! Damit setzt Charlie unbeabsichtigt eine Kettenreaktion von Ereignissen in Gang, die das Leben aller Beteiligten auf verrückt-verwirrende Weise miteinander verknotet.
