Mit Interviews und Performances von Lang Lang, Hélène Grimaud, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Harry Connick, Jr., Hank Jones, Marcus Roberts, Kenny Barron und Bill Charlap. Das Musikinstrument, das weltweit am meisten Handarbeit verlangt, ist der Steinway Flügel. Er ist einzigartig und jeder für sich hat eine individuelle Persönlichkeit - genau wie die Künstler, die ihn auf den Bühnen der großen Konzertsäle spielen. Der Film erforscht die Beziehung zwischen den Musikern und ihrem Instrument, verfolgt den Herstellungsprozess und illustriert beeindruckend, was jeden Steinway Flügel so einzigartig macht in einer Welt der automatisierten Massenproduktion. Von den Wäldern in Alaska über die Fabrikhallen in Queens bis zur Steinway Hall in Manhattan, die Reise jedes Flügels ist vielschichtig - 12 Monate Produktionszeit, 12000 Einzelteile, 450 Handwerker und zahllose Stunden feinster Handarbeit. Gefilmt an den wichtigsten Orten der Steinway Produktion - der Fabrik, Steinways exklusiver Bank, dem privaten Probenraum - ist NOTE BY NOTE eine Würdigung nicht nur der Handarbeit, sondern auch einer aussterbenden Spezies von Menschen, die mit dieser Arbeit zutiefst verbunden sind. So ist der Film nicht zuletzt eine Ode an diese unbeachteten Helden. NOTE BY NOTE erinnert uns daran, wie außerordentlich der Austausch zwischen einem Musiker und seinem Instrument sein kann - geschaffen durch die Handarbeit des Menschen, bestehend aus den Materialien der Natur.
