This is not my favorite Godspeed You! Black Emperor album, however, it is still an essential listen in their discography.

Released in November 2002 by Constellation Records, “Yanqui U.X.O.” is the third studio album by the Canadian experimental music ensemble GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR. It was the first album recorded outside of the country – in Chicago, Illinois at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studios in late 2001. Featuring 5 tracks clocking in at about 75 minutes (“Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls” and “Motherfucker=Redeemer, Part 1” are over 20 minutes long), “Yanqui U.X.O.” is arguably the most mysterious and intriguing band’s recording, described by Efrim Menuck as “raw, angry, dissonant, epic instrumental rock”. However, instead of aggressively wild political Rock (a la Black Flag or The Dead Kennedys), one will find here plastic, contemporary classical structures, slow minimalist developments, complex dynamic tensions, tonal extensions of simple melodic frames, dense orchestral arrangements, highly texturized sound, pronouncedly articulated dissonances between electric guitars, keyboards, and a string section accelerated by drums… Yes, it’s all instrumental album. And the music has very strong cinematic aura. It’s not so easy to understand the language GY!BE use to express their thoughts and deliver their message. But the more you open yourself to the music and sound, the better you feel huge devotion, concern, frustration, harshness, and severity “Yanqui U.X.O.” is filled with. Awesome work, very deep and consistent… but it might take time to understand its flow.

Godspeed You!
