Für das Deutsche Fernsehen (SDR, heute SWR) wurde es 1964 als Fernsehspiel vom Autor selbst bearbeitet. In einer privaten Irrenanstalt sind drei scheinbar verrückte große Physiker untergebracht ...
Am 5. Januar 1921 kam Friedrich Dürrenmatt in Konolfingen im Kanton Bern als Sohn eines Pfarrers zur Welt. Er studierte in Zürich und Bern Theologie, Literatur, Philosophie und Naturwissenschaften. Eigentlich wollte er Maler werden, schrieb aber schon in den 40er Jahren Erzählungen. 1947 löste sein Drama 'Es steht geschrieben' einen Theaterskandal aus. Ab 1952 lebte Dürrenmatt in Neuchâtel. Mit dem Drama 'Der Besuch der alten Dame' (1956) hatte er einen Welterfolg. 1968 wurde er Theaterdirektor in Basel. In dieser Zeit schrieb er viele Neufassungen seiner älteren Werke. Friedrich Dürrenmatt starb am 14.12.1990 in Neuchâtel.
Seine erzählerischen Werke sind oft Detektivgeschichten, und seine Dramen sind oft Tragikomödien, in denen es Elemente von Satire, Farce, und schwarzem Humor gibt. Ein zentrales Thema seiner Werke ist die Macht und die Frage der Verantwortung in einer scheinbar chaotischen Welt.
1986 wurde Friedrich Dürrenmatt mit dem Georg-Büchner-Preis ausgezeichnet.
