The London based duo SPC ECO, consisting of Rose Berlin (vocals, lyricist) and Dean Garcia (producer, bass, multi-instrumentalist), release their new album Calm on Tapete. A decade on from the SPC ECO debut release 3-D (2009), the listener finds themselves in the wake of Calm, the band's ninth full-length album release. As with everything including the title of this record SPC ECO is multifaceted, they do their own thing and always have. From the opening song "Out Of Sight", you'll be reminded of the musical roots of this band, that being the '90s pioneers of genre-blurring, Curve, and their musical director Dean Garcia. As you recover from the opening song, you're treated to the multi-layered glow of "All The Voices" and "Waking Up Again" as the voice of Rose Berlin swoons (as it always has) you will fall into the Godspeed-like "Rising Up" as it shrouds you with nocturnal sonic dust rolling onto the almost jaunty tones of "Pearls" leading seamlessly into the albums trip gaze flavored "Who Are You Now?" and "Ghosts" all the way through to the closing and forbidding dark and bass-heavy lilt of "Hours" which is the perfect song to close to any album. Calm is a coming of age record; ten years after SPC ECO started to release albums, you see a band with no concern for anything other than to make a record they want to make, no hidden agendas present. There are very few bands or artists who are able to move with such grace and confidence through what seems like 50 different genres some of which you have never heard of, which is something we've come to expect and accept from any SPC ECO record, you're never quite sure what you'll get, but you know you want it. Jose Antonio Z. - 16.06.2021 I have had this album by SPC ECO as a mp3 format downloaded since a long time ago but I do like and prefer owning physical media so it was great being able to purchase it as a vinyl record. Since the 1990’s I try to follow the musical work created by Dean Garcia firstly during his years in front of Curve then later doing some independent projects and now with SPC ECO. Unfortunately SPC ECO haven’t make much of their music available as vinyl or even CD and mostly of their music is mainly available as digital streaming. Very deep and intimate SPC ECO music bring us to melancholic trips. I love it!
