Igor G. - 13.02.2018 “Slab City” is the first full-length album of the British, London-based four-piece stoner-band STEAK. It was released by Napalm Records and followed the re-release of the band’s self-made EP’s “Disastronaught” (2012) and “Corned Beef Colossus” (2013). Influenced by the Kyuss’ genre classic “Welcome to Sky Valley”, the album is a homage to the glories of Stoner-Acid-Rock music in both its mindset and execution. STEAK even traveled from London to Palm Springs, CA in order to record particularly at Thunder-Underground studio with Harper Hug and to meet John Garcia, Arthur Seay and Gary Arce, who contributed respectively vocals (“Pisser” and “Old Timer D.W.”) and guitars to the album. While, “Slab City” is a definite dedication to Kyuss, it’s also a big step toward creating their own identity out of that influence. The album comprises eight new songs and two re-makes of the older tracks – “Liquid Gold” is from second EP, and “Machine” is from the first EP. All songs are quite well structured, thoroughly executed and produced. I would say, “Slab City” is an album by a group of musicians who knew precisely what they wanted to achieve – authentic, rough, loud, groovy, riffy and fuzzy “Stoner”. It’s an impressive album, but still there is a room to grow and strengthen the band’s own individuality. “Ltd. First Edition” version comes in digipak with 12-page comic-style booklet.
