| | Description: | Beeindruckt von der aufrüttelnden Wirkung der schockierenden Bilder aus dem Vietnam-Krieg Anfang der 70er-Jahre, beschloss der 1948 im US-Bundesstaat Massachusetts geborene Nachtwey, Kriegsfotograf zu werden, wobei er sich selbst eher als Antikriegsfotograf sieht. Seit Anfang der 80er-Jahre porträtiert er die Krisen und Kriege dieser Welt. Nachtwey hat in Nordirland fotografiert, im Sudan, in Ruanda, Somalia, Tschetschenien, Bosnien, Afghanistan, Südafrika, Nicaragua und vielen anderen Ländern. Mehrmals wurde er bei seiner Arbeit verwundet, besonders schwer am 10. Dezember 2003 im Irak. Sein Werk ist vielfach ausgestellt und ausgezeichnet worden. So erhielt Nachtwey bisher zweimal den World Press Award und fünfmal die Robert Capa Medaille, außerdem war Nachtwey sechsmal Magazin-Fotograf des Jahres in den USA. James Nachtwey ist überall da, wo Krieg und Armut wüten.Wo Menschen leiden und gewaltsam sterben, in Kosovo und Palästina, Ruanda und Afghanistan, bei den Bettlern von Jakarata und den Ruinen des World Trade Centers, da ist er auf der Suche nach dem besten Bild.
