"Tex Book Tenor" is a remarkable jazz album by the acclaimed tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin, released in CD format by Universal Music Japan. This recording captures Ervin at his creative peak, delivering powerful and soulful performances that showcase his unique approach to hard bop and post-bop jazz. The album features intricate improvisations, dynamic interplay with fellow musicians, and an unmistakable emotional depth that has made it a favorite among jazz enthusiasts. Universal Music Japan is renowned for its high-quality reissues of classic albums, bringing legendary recordings back to life with meticulous remastering and premium packaging. Booker Ervin was celebrated for his robust tone and innovative style; he gained prominence as part of Charles Mingus's ensembles before leading several influential sessions under his own name. His work on "Tex Book Tenor" stands as a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of modern jazz.
This session (1968) is one of the many blue note dates that were put on a shelve at the time of the recording and saw its release a decade later in the seventees; listening to this cd you wonder why its release took so long because the music here is first rate. The tunes on this album includes three Ervin originals, Barron's "Gichi" (which is great) and Woody Shaw's "In a capricorn way". Another highlight is the ballad "Lynn's Tune". Let's hope that Ervin's debut cd for blue note "the in between" - which is no longer available - will be released soon.
