SPACE SHANTY was first released on Decca in May '72 and became the first mainstream release to feature Steve Hillage. This digitally remastered reissue of the British progressive rock classic includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks, "Break the Chains" and "Mixed Up Man of the Mountains".
"Space Shanty" is the legendary debut and only studio album by Khan, released in 1972 and now available on CD from Cherry Red Records. This progressive rock masterpiece is celebrated for its intricate musicianship, blending psychedelic influences with complex arrangements and soaring melodies. The band featured Steve Hillage (later of Gong), Nick Greenwood, Dave Stewart (Egg, Hatfield & the North), and Eric Peachey?each bringing virtuosity to a sound that has become a cult classic among prog-rock enthusiasts. The music on the album is high-class space jazz-prog-rock. Hillage's songs are full of fresh ideas, the music is constantly changing and at the same time flows without any tension. Although much of the material is built in song format and contains recurring musical themes, the band often goes into drawn-out instrumental solos or mesmerizing guitar and organ interplay, dominated by Hillage's space-blues guitar and Stewart's sparkling Hammond organ playing.
According to a poll by Progarchives.com, as of March 2013, Space Shanty is ranked 7th in the list of the best albums of the Canterbury scene
