Das Doppelalbum aus dem Jahr 1984 gilt als eines der innovativsten und wichtigsten Werke der Alternative-Rock-Geschichte. Mit einer eklektischen Mischung aus Punk-, Funk-, Jazz- und Spoken-Word-Elementen auf insgesamt 43 Songs zeigt es den unverwechselbaren Stil der Band: kurze Stücke voller politischer Schärfe und musikalischem Experimentiergeist. Die Mitglieder D. Boon (Gitarre/Gesang), Mike Watt (Bass/Gesang) und George Hurley (Schlagzeug) schufen ein Album ohne Genregrenzen ? kompromisslos unabhängig im Geist.
Die Minutemen sind bekannt für ihren DIY-Ethos sowie ihre bahnbrechende Herangehensweise an Songwriting innerhalb der Hardcore-Szene Südkaliforniens Anfang der 1980er Jahre. Frühere Alben wie ?The Punch Line? oder ?What Makes a Man Start Fires?? machten sie zu Pionieren mit großem Einfluss auf zahlreiche Bands im Punk-, Indie-Rock- und weiteren Musikbereichen.
